How To Work From Home During Lockdown

Me: I’m done with work, I’m going home.

Also Me: I work from home.

But giggles aside, I hope you my friends are safe. We will get through this health crisis together!

So the other day our governor issued a statewide “stay home” mandate which takes effect Wednesday up to the end of April. But even before this announcement, the med spa where I devote most of my time (I manage two clinics) already stopped taking new appointments since aesthetic procedures are non-essential, both from the business and medical perspective. Oh I’m going to miss the action, my patients especially! Am I going to keep my sanity while locked down at home? How am I going to keep my mind preoccupied and my body up and about? So before I went home last Monday, I made sure I have all the documents I need, passwords for log-in, list of things to do, etc. so I can be productive at the very least.

But I am not new to working from home. In fact, I did it for two years (between 2009-2011, I made jewelries and sold them online and in craft fairs). The only difference is that I worked for myself then so I control my hours. Now it’s a different ballgame. I mirror my usual work hours, we still have our daily meetings albeit virtually, and communicate constantly.

With that said, I am happy to share some how-to-work-from-home tips to keep you motivated and balanced during a lockdown.

Don’t break your usual routine. Quarantine or Lockdown is not a vacation. Wake up the same time, get ready the same time. You’re still employed, you just happen to work from home at the moment.

Dress comfortably but still decent. If you’re seeing clients virtually, it’s but proper to look presentable.

Take in between breaks and stretch. There are several desk exercises you can do, just like when you’re in the office. 5 Minutes of simple exercise stimulate your mind and body.

No-disturb room. With kids also at home, this is pretty tricky but you have to create a space entirely your own so you can focus and accomplish deliverables.

Keep your work space tidy. This is pretty explanatory but a clean and organized space allow you to work seamlessly.

  • I just have to answer emails daily 🙂 But I really miss the office

These are such great tips. I will definitely be trying the getting dressed for it — I’ve been wearing sweatpants for days

  • I had to find the right spot to work in the house. After every meeting, I get up and do a light home chore…vacuum the living room, start some laundry. This helps break up the work day. I also have to force myself to take lunch away from my laptop and stop working at my usual time. I tend to keep working through the evening. I have gotten up daily and showered & dressed for work. Makeup has been hit and miss, but I’m happy with what I’ve done so far. 🙂

yes, mirroring your usual work hours do help. it’s a mindset, and yes to eat away from laptop.

  • My husband had a telehealth appointment today with his dermatologist. Now he has to get a prescription but didn’t think to have them call a drive through pharmacy. Getting dressed is important.

we have been doing tele-medicine too, good to have that option.

  • This would be doable if I didn’t have little kids lol. But I’m at least trying to make sure I walk out in the sunshine and shower every day because it’s easy to just do nothing but hermit all day.

I feel like different things work for everyone, its just all about finding what works for you! 🙂

  • It has taken some adjustment for me – long complex writing tasks are easier to stay focused on, but things involving connectivity with our servers have been excruciating. I will admit that I often have trouble sleeping and didn’t even go to bed last night. I just kept working through the night and have been up for two days now and don’t feel particularly tired. I have about 25 pages of high level writing to complete the second half of this week so it has been easier to just keep working as long as the flow is there. I love being able to do that – it is wonderful to get work done and feel alert! It will give me more time to be able to re-read and tweak the document before submitting on Monday.
