How to style activewear outside the gym

Yes and it’s fabulous.

Activewear is my default weekend getup, a stark contrast from my weekday business wear. But I do take a fabulous spin on it as I would love to be able to stroll around town, accomplish tasks, and not look like a gym poster child eyeing for recruits. I mean, to each their own and you can totally don whatever makes you feel comfortable but if you’re looking for ways to extend the wear of your leggings (or capris) outside the gym, here are my practical tips to help you get started.

Stick with neutral leggings. Black or anything dark is a no-brainer and refrain from loud prints; reason being, they’re easier to dress up and more or less reasonably acceptable for any occasion.

Pair your leggings with a statement top. I like black on black or anything earth tone for a more cohesive look. For my outfit above, I paired my leggings with a black cotton long sleeved shirt with low v cut at the back.

Wear your leggings with your non-gym shoes. Just because you’re feeling sporty doesn’t mean you will go all out from top to bottom. Wear sandals, espadrilles, ankle boots or walking shoes similar to what I am wearing. By the way, this vegan pair of sneakers are from Veja. Read: are your shoes vegan?

Switch to a dressier handbag. The power of purse, mind you! Leave your sporty backpack at home and opt for a shoulder bag that’s classic and timeless, style-wise. This vegan shoulder-crossbody bag with chain strap is from designer Alexandra K (review coming soon).

Wear makeup. You’re not going to the gym, right? or even if you will go afterwards, I say switch it up by wearing makeup. Looking put together while in leggings communicate one thing “I mean business so get out of my way”, haha!
