Tom Ford Lip Summer Color Shimmer (Limited Edition) Solar Gold: Review, Swatch, FOTD

I know we’re just starting to enjoy spring but blame me not for getting uber pumped up for summer. First, I’m looking forward to having two weeks off from work. Second, I’m hitting the big 4-0 mark. Third, I am seriously rewarding myself with the ultimate dream purse to celebrate this milestone. Fourth, summer makeup launches what else!

Now if you’ve been following this blog for a while (Aloha if you’re a noob), you know that I’m insane with all things lipsticks. I wrote about it here, read if you want few minutes of feel-good time. So while browsing Nordstrom online last week, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the new Tom Ford Summer Limited Edition Color Shimmer.

Available in two shades, I purchased Solar Gold wishful-thinking that it will drench my lips with goddess-like exuberance (the other shade is moonlight).

Retailing for $49 (.1 oz/ 3g), this lipstick is housed in an elegant retro-ish white and gold tube. It’s similar to the spring collection which I have reviewed here. If you’re familiar with Tom Ford lipsticks then you’ll instantly recognize the stark difference from this collection. Can someone tell me why the tip is round? Honestly, this got me thinking out loud; gut feel says (1) it’s a limited edition (2) it’s more than a lipstick.

Okay, I will keep my analysis short and sweet. If you have never tried a Tom Ford lippy before, this shouldn’t be your first purchase. Point-blank, the very sheer a.k.a almost nil pigmentation may disappoint you. Initially I was!

Swatched, you can hardly see gold right? Should I give up? Nah, because it does possess great qualities inherent to Tom Ford: moisturizing, non-sticky and commendable wear time. Plus, when paired with dark eye makeup (I went a little subdued in the photos below), it makes a great neutral albeit shimmer lippy to rock at daytime.

If you’re a fan of sparkle then you’ll exhaust every effort to make the most of out of this lipstick. After all, you didn’t pay almost fifty bucks for nothing so here are different ways you can use this shimmer:

(1) As a topper for liquid lipsticks (i.e. Kat Von D, Hourglass). The trick is to let the liquid lipstick dry first for few minutes then apply this at the center of your lips for that unexpected burst of shimmer. Yes, I prefer liquid lipstick that dries to a matte finish to prevent color transfer mishap.

(2) If you have La J-Lo flawless skin, use this to highlight your cheekbones. I don’t and sadly, the gold sparkles emphasized my ludicrous pores from hell.

(3) As a highlighter stick for brow arch.

Overall, the question here is… will I purchase the other shade? or better yet, should I stock up since it’s a limited edition? NO. I’m not really a neutral-kind-of-gal, I love brights so I’m going to charge solar gold to experience…. and obviously on mah poor credit card.

if there’s a will, there’s a way.

What are you most excited about summer?

Wow!!! This is a very pretty lip gloss. I like what you did with your lips. Choosing the Kat Von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick (Lolita) and the TF lip shimmer solar gold. Great choice indeed!

Thanks much Susie. I chose Lolita because it dries matte and transfer-free. I'm so OC not to stain this TF lippy, haha!

  2. April 7, 2014 / 10:35 am

That's a very expensive shimmery gloss? Hmm. If it were nail polish, I'd layer it over black to see what it could do. Do you have a black lippie? 🙂

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:30 am

Yeah really pricey. Good question, I don't have black lippie, now you gave me an idea!!!!

  3. April 7, 2014 / 1:15 pm

I've yet to purchase a TF Lipstick because my wallet won't let me lol. I love the packaging though.

  4. April 7, 2014 / 1:22 pm

It's a very pretty lip shimmer, but I don't know if I'd spend $49 on it. Maybe if I was a huge fan of the formula, but so far I haven't had a chance to try any TF lippies, so I wouldn't know 🙂

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:32 am

If you decide on purchasing TF down the line, start with the Lip Color line, it will get you hooked!

  5. April 7, 2014 / 2:30 pm

It's a pretty shade but I'm so used to seeing you in bright colors.

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:32 am

Thanks Aleya. I agree, my lips favor bright and bold shades

  6. April 7, 2014 / 2:34 pm

Super gorgeous shade. And girl if 4-0 looks like you, sign me up. I would never believe that you were turning the 4-0. This is such a gorgeous shade!

bummer. Somewhat similar is Estee Lauder's old Tiger Eye. At least it looks the same in the tube from these pics. It is a gold but actually shows a nude gold shimmer on the lips. Very moisturizing. It's one of my favorites for summer.

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:34 am

Thanks for the heads up Giada. If only it has more color than shimmer, then this lippy will be my summer fave too!

  8. April 7, 2014 / 5:27 pm

The lack of pigmentation would kill me.

  9. April 7, 2014 / 5:39 pm

Whomp whomp 🙁 Still pretty over that lipstick though!

  10. April 7, 2014 / 6:35 pm

One day I will buy a TF something! The products always look so nice!

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:36 am

Awesome! Yeah, the packaging is really classy and timeless

  11. April 7, 2014 / 7:31 pm

Wow! In the picture of just the stick it looks almost orange. But it looks great when applied!

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:36 am

Thanks Carol. That's why I rely on swatches before buying…

  12. April 7, 2014 / 9:59 pm

It photographs so well! I haven't tried anything by Tom Ford yet

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:36 am

You should. Sorry for being an enabler here, sorry not sorry. LOL

    • April 8, 2014 / 7:37 am

Me too! I was planning on buying the palette but had second thoughts last minute

  13. April 8, 2014 / 1:23 am

For the price Tom Ford wants for lipstick, I would need a LOT more payoff in color.

  14. April 8, 2014 / 1:32 am

This is so pretty and I love layering lipsticks. Darn my wallet for limiting me though!

  15. April 8, 2014 / 2:13 am

It looks great on you, I have yet to pull the trigger on TF.

  16. April 8, 2014 / 4:32 am

This is pretty, but I would have been disappointed by the lack of pigment!

  17. April 8, 2014 / 10:10 am

Awww, I totally thought this would be a full-coverage nude. Disappointed because that is what I was expecting but I guess it's nice if you wear sheer. I personally like bold and bright.
