Shhhh, can I share a ‘lil secret? I don’t smoke and drink. I eat everything but in moderation. I try to exercise at least three times a week. I take multivitamins and Vitamin E daily. I chug water. And yeah, I never leave home without sunscreen. While I don’t profess to have great-looking skin (hello open pores and acne marks, duh?!) but at not-so-tender age of 39, I’m glad that I don’t have turkey neck and prominent wrinkles yet. Not just yet. So I guess my so-called boring lifestyle and being a beauty blogger on the side have benefits ha? I said it before and I’ll say it again, aging is inevitable. It’s only a matter of time. But if you take good care of your skin vis-a-vis health, then supple skin can be yours for a while.
I’m not new to dietary supplements so when PR folks from Neocell approached me to do a review and giveaway for my readers, I said bring it on! But before we get into the nitty-gritty, let me just mention that my views and experience should not supersede what your doctor or nutritionist tells you. Remember, if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition, it’s best to ask your physician first. Practice common sense, oki?
You might have heard of Neocell at some point. It is the # 1 best-selling collagen brand worldwide and sold in most health food stores and vitamin shops. So without sounding like a sales representative, (hey I used to work for big pharma before, another reveal!) collagen helps give strength to various body structures including the skin. It’s what makes the skin taut and supple. But as we age, collagen production slows down. Hence, our skin starts to sag and joints become stiff. Recently, Dr. Oz talked about collagen pills that can help you look younger. Intrigued? read further.
Neocell Collagen Beauty Builder ($19.99, 150 tablets, GNC) contains 19 amino acids that help sustain collagen levels in aging skin, hyaluronic acid that hydrates and promotes elasticity, alpha lipoic acid and biotin that enhance collagen formation, and silica which is a building block for strength and elasticity in skin.
So I’ve been taking this supplement religiously for over a month now. According to the label, you can take three tablets twice a day but I’m okay with two tablets in the morning (on an empty stomach for better absorption). If there is one significant improvement that I can totally vouch for, that would be stronger nails. This supplement came in such perfect timing! Months prior, my nails were breaking really bad, my left middle finger and right index finger to be more specific. In three weeks time, I noticed not a single breakage at all, no kidding. So if that equates to stronger nails, I couldn’t be happier!
I have also tried Neocell Beauty Bursts Gourmet Collagen Soft Chews ($19.95, 60 pcs, GNC) and gurl, I love the chocolate minty flavor! I have sweet tooth so these came in handy especially when I’m at work! It’s my in-between-meal candy albeit healthier. As of this writing, I’m down to one last piece so I’m definitely purchasing it!
In summary, having good skin entails a combination of healthy lifestyle and proper skincare. It’s not either or and a question of which is which. So for to me to declare that supplements alone can do wonders to your skin is downright misleading. But I tell you what, I am happy and will continue to take collagen nutritional supplements. My choice, my skin.
