There are so many policies pushing for a healthy America but you know one thing I find so ironic? healthy foods are damn expensive! Going green, natural and organic is akin to living the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Let’s do simple math. $50 will buy me no more than five items from a health food store but maybe ten or more at Walmart. The solution ain’t rocket science but if we can make healthy foods affordable to all then we will have better choices and maybe stoping blaming McDonalds for obesity.

Now that you’ve heard me loud and clear, let’s focus on beauty matters. I don’t know about you but my trip to a health food store is never complete without heading to the beauty aisle. It’s the makeup junkie instinct in me, who else can relate?

As far as I know, there are three Whole Foods in Hawaii.  I prefer going to Down To Earth, it’s locally owned but has the same concept overall. I just wish they carry more makeups!

For today’s post, I narrowed my choices to my Top 5 a.k.a Fab Five so in no random order, here they are:

(1) Sibu Beauty Sea Buckthorn Hydrating Serum ($39.95, 1 fl oz/ 30ml). Considered a beauty berry in Asia and Europe, sea buckthorn has omega and bioactive compounds that are essential for collagen production, healthy hair and stronger nails. I have reviewed Sibu serum here but in a nutshell, it’s a lightweight natural/vegan serum with inviting aroma which is perfect for daytime skincare!

(2) Mineral Fusion Nail Lacquer ($7.99) is a recent discovery. You may or may not know that I’m uber low maintenance with my nails and absolutely talentless in nail art. I think Mineral Fusion had me in mind with its chip-resistant formula. I am impressed that I had six days of wear time with Nickel and Dime (metallic silver gray) before it chipped, and to think that I’m obsessed with handwashing!

(3) Alba Botanica Lip Gloss ($4.99) isn’t exclusive to health foods store because you can also buy it elsewhere but I always gravitate to it whenever I visit Down to Earth. It smells good and very moisturizing!

(4) Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel ($9.95) is an alcohol-free toner. In case you don’t know yet, witch hazel is good for acne- prone skin while rose petal is great for hydration. It has a subtle rosy scent and for less than $10, it’s a steal!

(5) Earth Science Chamomile and Green Tea Eye Makeup Remover ($7). This stuff is made from several herbal extracts. I like that it didn’t sting or irritate my eyes at all.  It’s fragrance-free so big props to that!

Have you shopped beauty items from your local health food store? What’s your favorite?
