  • It’s almost tank top season. Here in Hawaii, we’re already hitting high 80s to 90s! Here are my top 4 secrets to smooth, bump-free, and bright armpits: 1. If going hair-free is your jam, your best investment is laser hair removal. Not all lasers are the same so it’s important to do your research. Go to a credible medspa or clinic. I can’t emphasize this enough: you can’t discount quality. I’ve had patients come to me with disappointing results from other places who purchased Groupon. Not that the latter is bad, but as the saying goes, if it’s too good to be true, then it ain’t true. 2. Go easy with waxing and tweezing. The constant hair pulling not only injures the skin but also contributes to hyperpigmentation. As a treatment provider, I’ve seen really bad cases. 3. Use natural deodorants. Unless you suffer from hyperhidrosis (medical term for excessive sweating which can be caused by underlying medical condition, medication side effect, genetics, overstimulated sweat glands), know that sweating is our body’s way to compensate for heat and balance water/e+. Antiperspirants defeat this purpose and can contribute to darkening related to sensitivity to fragrance and chemical ingredients. I speak from experience because I used to have quite dark armpits until I switched to natural deodorants. 4. Gently exfoliate. You don’t need to buy fancy ones, just use whatever exfoliant you use for your face. This process helps remove dead skin cells. Include your armpits in your “me-time”. They deserve some TLC too.   • My thoughts and opinion alone. I consider a product to be really cruelty-free if it doesn’t contain any animal or its byproducts hence I choose and buy on both conditions: cruelty-free and vegan. Why is this important? Cruelty-free is against animal testing but a product can still contain ingredient which is harvested, created or sourced either direct or indirect form of animal cruelty. For example, carmine (red dye, a common ingredient in makeups) is made from beetles which is produced by crushing and boiling the bodies to extract the pigment. It’s estimated that about 70,000 of beetles are needed to produce just one pound of dye. Is this really necessary? There are more alternatives out there. I talked about squalene in another post but to recap, it’s made from shark liver oil, is this necessary? There are tons of alternatives that can give you the same result sans cruelty. Think about it. Veganism is not about perfection but our sincerest desire to not contribute to acts of cruelty, across the board. And I don’t mean to sound holier than thou. Veganism is a journey, but it’s a path that will totally change your ethos. So do you just throw away your stash that’s not cruelty-free or vegan, now that you know better? It’s totally up to you. If you wish to keep it, just don’t buy it again. You may not be aware of one ingredient that’s lurking in your beauty stash or supplement which actually contains shark liver oil: squalene. Completely unnecessary since there are tons of plant-based alternatives out there, squalane (olive oil) and other vegetable and herbs that have varying healing properties, skin-wise. Fact: humans attack and kill sharks (for their fins, teeth and meat, hundreds of thousands a year) more than shark attacks ever documented.
