Some people are predisposed to having dark knees and elbows, for the most part it’s related to genetics. Age is also a factor. The older we get, the darker or dryer they become. Call it normal wear-and-tear: constant friction makes the skin thick and dead cells accumulate. Unless you suffer from certain skin conditions that would require treatment from your doctor, this DIY will help keep your knees and elbows look fab.

Exfoliate and moisturize

Exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells while moisturization prevents your elbows and knees from becoming flaky. Do this regularly and you will see stark improvement.

Ingredients: Olive oil, sugar or table salt,
lemon or lime juice. (Optional) lime essential oil

Olive oil is probably the most versatile product ever discovered. It is good for your skin because it is natural, non-comedogenic, and preserves the skin’s natural oil level. Sugar or table salt (even ground coffee) are good inexpensive exfoliants. Lime or lemon juice has natural bleaching properties. For the ingredients shown above, you can substitute juice with 4-5 drops of lemon/lime/orange essential oil. Just don’t use the essential oil by itself, it’s not safe due to its high concentration.

Mix about two tablespoons of olive oil with sugar and two tablespoons of lemon juice. There is no hard and fast rule. The idea is that you should be able to feel the sugar (or salt) when rubbed gently against your elbows or knees. Tackle each area for one minute. Rinse with warm water. Apply cream or lotion after.

Be careful! Your tub can be slippery when you use this DIY solution. Clean your sink or tub thoroughly, we don’t want any accidents…

Hope this helps! xoxo
