easy potato au gratin recipe, how to make potato au gratin

Let me briefly interrupt your makeup musings with my comfort food, Potato Au Gratin! There are so many versions of this famous French dish, from using thick cream to several types of cheese but since I named this Easy-Bake a.k.a "the lazy way", I used ingredients that are dummy-proof. But I guarantee, this tastes just as good! Ready, set, bake!

Ingredients:
Baking potatoes (7-8 pcs)
Alfredo sauce
Sharp cheddar cheese
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

How-to:
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees
Slice unpeeled potatoes, not too thick or too thin (as shown in the photo)
Drizzle olive oil in baking dish
Layer sliced potatoes, then pour Alfredo sauce (repeat 2 or 3 times)
Cover with aluminum foil
Bake for 30 minutes
Remove foil
Bake for another 30 minutes or until the top is quite brown (not burnt!)
Sprinkle cheese
Return dish to oven for 10 minutes or until cheese is fully melted

MARC JACOBS BEAUTY Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Lacquer, 140 Petra, review, swatch

It's pretty much established on le blog that I'm no nail connoisseur. My cuticles are deplorable, I struggle with nail art, even a dotticure seems like a gargantuan task. Don't ask me about water marble, I haven't even tried appliqués yet, por favor. With those trivialities out of the way, I still crave for fabulous-looking nails. The simpler the application, the better. The longer it wears, even better. If you know me well enough, I look past the tag price. I pay for quality, that's the whole essence of a designer vis-a-vis luxury brand right?

So what's up with the superfluous preface? Ok here's the deal breaker. While I'm head-over- heels in love with Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon, the evidence of which is scattered all over the blog, I seriously detest this particular shade 140 Petra from the eponymous nail lacquer collection. Yes, it's a gorgeous metallic bronze/taupe; yes, it's opaque in one coat; yes, it's creamy; yes it's non-streaky. But girly, this is chip festival in less than 24 hours! No exaggeration. I know I'm hardcore when it comes to my nails (no thanks to countless handwashing and sanitizing) but I am appalled that at $18, I can get better results with a cheapo $3 brand. To you ladies who change your nail polish every single day, my concern is probably peanuts but I'm the type who does weekly (the most is bi-weekly) because I don't have the time to tinker with my nails, let alone worry about ugly chipped nails after a long day at work.

I'm a staunch believer of "first impression lasts". 99.9% of my repurchases were all anchored to first impressions. It's the same when I meet people for the first time. If personality sucks big time, I won't even bother to reconsider. I'm going to end my rant now. I nailed my point. You understand my stance. Buy at your own risk. I'm tired and #hangry

Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon (Plum)age and O(vert), Review, Swatch, FOTD, best high-end eyeliner

Frequent readers of this blog know that when it comes to eyeliners, my loyalty is akin to real-life relationship. There is no reason to fool around when you have found THE ONE; the VERY ONE in tune with your chemistry. THE ONLY ONE who won't make you cry. Ladies, hear me out... Telenovela aside, I'm talking about Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon!

Not too long ago, I introduced you to Blacquer and (Luna)tic, made you ponder (Th)ink, and rocked Ro(cocoa). With back-to-back smashing performance, an addition of one or two won't hurt the bank so to complete my birthday month of just-because-haulage, let's welcome two more shades: (Plum)age, a metallic purple, and O(vert), a semi-mettalic army green. Each retails for $25 and exclusively sold at Sephora.

Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon (Plum)age and O(vert), Review, Swatch, FOTD, best high-end eyeliner

Used before photographed, that's how eager I was with these beauties. The tip is normally pointed the first time but as mentioned before, it inevitably becomes round with constant use. These eyeliners are retractable so you won't get the sharp tip ever again but other than that, the consistency is the same across the board: very creamy, easy to apply, blend, and smudge along the lash line if need be. You can also this eyeliner as eyeshadow base for added vibrance. Worn over an eye primer, wear time is pretty much the whole day or in my case, twelve hours give or take. So why am I lusting over this pricey eyeliner? It's crystal-clear; this doesn't make my eyes watery at all. I can use it on my waterline without irritation. It doesn't transfer to my contact lens. I can count on it anytime, any day. Winter, spring, summer or fall.

Here are swatches of (O)vert and (Plum)age:

I used (O)vert and smudged it along my lower lash line, Blacquer on waterline, and (Plum)age along my upper lash line. Both photos were taken outdoors.

Guerlain Super Aqua-Serum BB Hydra+ (Moyen/Medium): Review, Swatch, Before/After
::    affiliate    ::

Ask me three years ago and I wouldn't even bother with a BB cream. With my skin being extremely oily back then (and many many moons ago), it's a rather surprising change that I am gravitating towards it now more than ever. I mean most BBs I've tried back then were mostly dewy and uber hydrating, a stark contrast to what my greasy face needed. Blame summer or hormonal factor aging, either way I just want light coverage, sunscreen, and moisturizer all in one sitting. Fuzz-free is the buzzword for this old lady, haha!

Guerlain recently added BB cream to its famous Aqua-Serum line, aptly named BB+ Hydra (40ml, 1.3 fl oz, $75). In a nutshell, it's a tinted moisturizer with sun protection benefits. I'm big on serums so even if I'm still loving another foundation from Guerlain,  the Terracota Joli Teint (review here), you can tell that "want"  obviously won over "need". I want it regardless, #idontevenhavetoexplain

Guerlain Super Aqua-Serum BB Hydra+ (Moyen/Medium): Review, Swatch, Before/After

What the website says: "Guerlain takes a cue from its best-selling Super Aqua-Serum and its Aquacomplex, which purifies cellular water to improve circulation and restore a youthful appearance, and infuses it into Super Aqua-Serum BB+ Hydra Beauty Balm Instant Hydration SPF 25. In a single step, your skin receives instant, long-lasting hydration, your wrinkles and fine lines are smoothed and your complexion is noticeably more even. Its subtly tinted, feather-light texture protects your skin from both UV rays and dehydration while perfecting your complexion for a naturally radiant glow. It's lightly fragranced with notes of fresh rose, aqua flower, ylang ylang and jasmine."

What my oily yet maturing skin says: I was pleasantly surprised that its dewy finish didn't turn me off.  It applied smoothly and evenly like a real foundation. It didn't settle into my pores or aggravate their size as the day progressed (if you are cursed with oily skin and ravaged by craters, then you know that shine is our greatest foe!). While there were minor shine issues and I had to blot my face twice during the entire period I was wearing it (which was approximately ten hours), I still like the overall lightweight-feel and sense of inexplicable glow this BB Cream gave me. In fact, I got asked by dear patients what makeup I was wearing or was told that I look fresh. Now whether that's wholeheartedly said or merely attributed to vision problems, I seriously don't know *insert four snaps here*. Wear time is impressive, it stayed on until I was ready to remove a day's worth of hard work. Needless to say, the sunscreen component (SPF25) is cherry on top.

The only drawback which is common to all BB creams? it's available in only two shades, Light and Medium so color-correction is required if neither one suits you. Fragrance is also relative but if you're familiar with Guerlain, then you know that all their products are floral scented.

To your enjoyment, here's moi au naturel, with Guerlain Super Aqua-Serum BB Hydra+ in Medium, and the final look (covered my eye bags with NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, set with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, and drenched my lips with YSL Rouge Volupte Shine 4 Rouge in Danger).

Contrary to what most people think, weight gain isn't always a consequence of aging. Barring medical conditions beyond one's control, but it's the inactivity, sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy eating patterns that predispose someone to creeping weight gain.

Some of you know that I just hit the big 4-0 this month; in between gray hairs and having my first mandatory mammogram soon, exercise helps me stay young and in tiptop shape (okay I'm trying here!). Right now, my routine is composed of hiphop dance, hula hoop and yoga at the comfort of my patio. Wait a sec, I'm not morphing TheFabZilla to a food blog but unknown to most of you, moi loves to cook. It's not chef-calibre but this lipstick-obsessed woman knows how to whip up a recipe or two. To say that I love vegetables is an understatement, I have to have 'em in every meal or I feel deprived. For today, 'thought I'd share with you this easy-bake Veggie Lasagna!

Lasagna is all about layering but in lieu of pasta sheets, we're using vegetables hence the title, duh?!
Feel free to use whatever you have in your pantry/fridge but here are my staples: eggplant, zucchini, bell pepper, mushrooms, spinach, mozzarella cheese, marinara pasta sauce, olive oil.

How to make vegetable lasagna, healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, vegan food

    How-to:
    Slice vegetables
In baking pan, layer vegetables alternately with cheese and sauce
(as demonstrated in the above collage)
Drizzle the very top layer with olive oil
    Cover with aluminum foil
    Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
    Bake for 1.5 hours

Similar to next-day pasta lasagna, the stacked appearance of this veggie version is more pronounced after being refrigerated. But with food this good, my growling tummy can't wait! Bon appetit!

how to prevent turkey neck, what is turkey neck

Let's get real here ladies. We focus too much attention on our face and eyes more than our neck, at least when it comes to skincare. Anti-wrinkles here, even out pigmentation there, shrink pores down, fill lines up, it's a merry-go-round of sorts while chasing the proverbial fountain of youth. Then boom! Turkey neck came to visit too soon and decided to stick around!

Turkey neck a.k.a saggy neck is simply loose skin under the chin we can't unfortunately tuck away. We can delay the occurrence but once it's there, we just have to embrace it. Just look at all the celebrities with overly-stretched and botoxed faces; while they remain wrinkle-free, their necks scream otherwise. So what causes turkey neck then? The number one reason is aging. Overtime, skin loses its elasticity and the muscles become flaccid. Today I'm sharing with you how I defy it, come hell or high water, haha!

    1) Moisturize. Whatever moisturizer or serum I use on my face, I take the extra step to extend it to my décolletage. I have reviewed a gamut of moisturizers and serum on the blog, just hit search.

    2) Don't skip sunscreen. We all know that UV rays age skin fast so apply sunscreen as you normally would.

    3) Exercise. Inactivity leads to weak neck muscles, among other things. Turn your neck left to right, count ten times. Another trick is to tilt your head back and do imaginary chewing for ten seconds, repeat as necessary.

Like I said, these are meant to prevent, not to eradicate neck wrinkles. At the end of the day, you and I are smart enough to know that aging is inevitable, it's only a matter of time.

Vegan Cuts Snack Box, vegan food, vegan snacks, review

And so I succumbed, to a subscription box that is. But it's not a beauty box mind you. Of all things, I was drawn to snacks! Kimberly from The Plastic Diaries was the great enabler because right after reading her post, I salivated like a hungry wolf wanting to taste those vegan foodies.

So what convinced me to tackle the world of snack subscription box? First, nothing really interests me at the grocery aisle anymore. It's the same salty, cholesterol-packed, carbo-loading, sugar-laden and overhyped finger-lickin' good snacks. Second, the only health food store near me has limited assortments. Third, I want a quick snack to tie me up 'til lunch time.  Fourth, 7-10 snacks at $19.95 a month with free shipping sounds like a great deal (I can only buy three items for the same price at my local health food store).

Vegan Cuts, as the name implies, caters to people with vegan lifestyle. But even if you're not solely vegan (I'm not...not yet), it's great to discover products that are equally tasty yet healthy! Similar to most subscription boxes, you can auto-pay every month or cancel anytime. From what I read, you receive the box 2nd or 3rd week of the month. Shipping was fast because it only took less than a week from the time I placed my initial order.

For the month of June, here are the products I received:
    1. Laughing Giraffe Organics Coconut Macaroons
    2. Pasta Chips
    3. Nii Bar organic and gluten-free Peanut Butter
    4. Somersault Snacks made from sunflower seeds, toasted grains and Pacific sea salt
    5. Date Lady syrup for cooking, baking or using in place of maple syrup
    6. Peeled snacks from a blend of apple and berries
    7. Nutiva hemp protein powder
    8. Heartland natural antioxidant supplement powder
    9. St. Claire's Organics mint candies
    10. Energyfruits squeezable crushed fruit snack

Vegan Cuts Snack Box, vegan food, vegan snacks, review

Nii Bar Peanut Bar (organic, gluten-free, vegan, soy-free): I didn't like the taste so I gave it to Hub who's more into protein bars. He didn't like it either.

St. Claire's Organics Peppermints (certified organic, allergen-free, vegan, kosher): straight-up minty; a quick remedy to garlic or pizza breath, haha!

Somersault Snacks: they look like dog treats but good enough for light snacking.

Vegan Cuts Snack Box, vegan food, vegan snacks, review

Peeled Snacks Apple clusters: gone in minutes, it's my #1 favorite; very fruity and not so sweet, if that makes sense.

Lemon Snakaroons: devoured in minutes (hey there are only 3 pcs!); I like the mix of coconut and lemon taste.

Pasta Chips: made with sea salt but it's not too salty which is a good thing.

Vegan Cuts Snack Box, vegan food, vegan snacks, review

Nutiva Hemp Protein: still unopened because I haven't made a real smoothie in a while.

Uber Green Antioxidant Powder: tastes like tea when mixed with water

Crushed Fruit Blueberry Plum: nice but quite sour for my taste.

Date Lady syrup: my least favorite because I'm not into syrups anyway.

Overall it was a good try. I can't form a solid opinion yet because it's my first box so let's see what July has to offer.

Are you curious? Vegan Cuts ships to Canada for additional $8, around the world for $15.

If you caught my post last July 4, you know I just turned 40. Looking back, I met decade milestones with different reactions. I was excited when I turned 20 thinking I'm no longer in the teenage category; I cried as I advanced to 30 thinking shit! I'm old; Now that I'm 40, who's old?

Save for free fireworks, I welcomed yet another year rather quiet. Hubzilla and I watched the movie Tammy (starring my fave actress Melissa McCarthy) then we headed to Romano's Macaroni Grill at Ala Moana for late lunch. I had fresh catch of the day: mahi-mahi with sun-dried tomatoes while Hub went orgasmic with his Tuscan ribeye. If ever you're on the island, check out this place, great food and service (our server Taylor is the sweetest ever). I was also serenaded by one of the servers belting his own rendition of Italian birthday song. I think Hub was so fixated on the free chocolate cake that he forgot to film the whole action, haha! Anyhoo, after that we went to Macy's and picked up my gift from him. Not another makeup so I went straight to jewelry section and scored a pair of diamond hoops (happy wife, happy life). Our last stop was the Burberry store where I happily gifted myself a hobo bag. Lipstick, purse, jewelry: those are my kryptonite.

On to my laid-back fab (as I would call it) OOTD. Gotta have some blue on the 4th so I matched my blue henley fold-up shirt (Target find!) with a pair of black shorts. Other deets on photo below (clickable links)

Next is FOTD (reviews are linked). I'm in between shade at the moment (fading from self-tanner but still dark to go back to "winter shade"). I know you get what I mean. So to remedy the situation, I mixed Guerlain Joli Teint (Moyen/Medium) and Estee Lauder Double Wear Light for my foundation and then I set it with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder (Diffused Light). To add summer warmth, I applied Guerlain Terracota Bronzer on the side of my cheeks, forehead and jawline. For some cheek color, I used Nars Blush (Orgasm). For my eye makeup, I used Marc Jacobs Highliner Crayon Blacquer to tightline my upper lash line and (Plum)age as base for eyeshadow and also for waterline. For the rest of my eye makeup, I decided to use Urban Decay Vice 2 palette. I applied Betrayal (lilac) on my lids, Rewind (brown) on my crease, Toxic (copper; also on crease as transition shade), Habit (flesh; for brow bone). For my upper lashes, I used Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara (part of Sephora VIB b'day freebie) and Clinique for my bottom lashes. Finally for my lips, I settled for Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy in Orchid 505 (pending review).

    'til next OOTD/FOTD,

    Kathryne
