As if migraine wasn't enough to spoil my long weekend last week, here I am sniffling and down with a cold for the nth time. I tell 'ya, no matter how much I take care of myself (read: daily multivitamins, healthy eating, exercising, tanking up water, constant handwashing/sanitizing, etc.), being exposed to sick patients every single day does affect my immune system. So with my mood so dull, why don't I doll up? Fine, bring on the brights!

I don't want to go overboard so I decided to keep my eye makeup simple yet fun.... and the lips? you know I love me some oomph! Here are the makeups I used for this week's #FaceFriday  (reviews are linked)

Becca Boudoir Skin Mineral Powder (to set BB cream)
Givenchy Terre Exotique (eyelids, cheekbone, nose bridge, forehead)
L'Oreal Colour Riche Eyeliner (Cobalt) for outer half of upper lash line
Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner for inner half of upper lash line
Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon (Blacquer) to tightline upper lash line
Dior Addict It Lash (deluxe sample from Sephora)

You know what's interesting? Looking back at my reviews, I didn't like Chanel Rouge Allure La Diva (the matte finish is not compatible with my lips) and Pacifica Enlightened Gloss Ravish (lack of berry pigmentation); however, they do compliment each other when layered! how's that for a change of heart?

So here's another case of "I went to Target to buy groceries and checked out with beauty stuff". Oh well happy wife, happy life. Hub must be in limbo when he snapped these photos of moi. One was obviously "wtf mode", the other "okay fine take a pic". To purchase or not, that is the question.

Needless to say, the makeup junkie in me triumphed with two lip glosses from Pacifica, my favorite Target brand after Sonia Kashuk.

In a nutshell, these lip glosses a.k.a Enlightened Gloss are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. They are infused with coconut and antioxidants which hydrate the lips. I picked up Nudist (golden pearl nude) and Ravish (berry gold).

If you're into nude, sheer or barely-there lippy, Pacifica Enlightened Gloss won't disappoint. It's moisturizing but slightly tacky. The shimmer component illuminates (obviously) your lips, making them look plump without the dreaded sting. Some of you know that I gravitate towards bright lip colors so it was interesting to break such monotony. While Nudist was true to its description, Ravish was a disappointment due to its lack of pigmentation when worn. But it's not the end of the world, I can layer it over a lipstick when I want to.

reviva labs makeup primer review, how to make makeup last
   sample  received

Egg frying in oil. That's how I look if I don't use a makeup primer. Scrambled or sunny side up, it doesn't matter because grease takes the lead. Add makeup meltdown, now that's one badly-cooked egg!

Recently I had the opportunity to try another product from Reviva Labs, a company known for its all-natural skincare line. Retailing for $19.50, this makeup primer is surprisingly impressive for a number of reasons.

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), Olive Oil, Coenzyme Q10, Squalane.

So let's start by counting the ingredients, seven in total right? A similar primer sold at Sephora has 20+  unnecessary fillers yet both perform the same function. The question is, will you pay for what's in it or what's in it for you? If you're into natural and affordable products, Reviva Labs is the logical choice.

Dimethicone is a common ingredient in primers because it acts like a protective barrier and fills in pores and lines which makes your skin look somewhat flawless. The only downside to most dimethicone- based makeup primers I have tried is the strong chemical fragrance. For whatever reason, Reviva Labs did a good job of eliminating the funk.

The consistency of this primer is on the thicker side but it does feel velvety and smooth upon application. I used two pumps to cover my entire face (over face serum). Overall, I'm pleased that it helped preserve my makeup throughout the day, reduced my pores albeit temporarily, and slightly controlled the ever greasy pan, my face that is!

Have you tried this primer?

Beautifully-embossed and reminiscent of intricately-designed cathedral ceilings, I have but one word to say when I unboxed Givenchy Terre Exotique Healthy Glow Bronzing Powder Douce Croisiere 2, Magnifico! From its sleek black enamel case to ginormous mirror to bounteous product (16 g/ .56 oz), this beauty easily earned a stellar spot in my growing list of bronzer must-haves!

While I use bronzer practically year-round, it becomes more of a staple during summer months. I prefer matte but also enjoy sheen for that proverbial sun-kissed glow. Givenchy Terre Exotique performs exactly like that. It renders subtle luminosity, nothing too dramatic, overboard and muddy, at least for my medium skin tone. I like to apply it across my forehead, nose bridge and a little bit on the cheekbone and temple.

For comparison, here are side-by-side swatches of my favorite bronzers to-date. Givenchy Terre Exotique Douce Croisiere 2 is lighter than Hourglass Mirage and Guerlain Terracota and just a tad darker than Nars Laguna. If you're fair-skinned, you will get more payoff from this. To me, it only becomes noticeable in certain angles and lighting situations.

I have terrible headache as I write this post so I will KISS... keep it short and sweet. Talk to the eyes. Not a single word spoken yet you know what the other person wants to tell you (or vice versa) by looking into each other's eyes.

Eye to eye. It's when you make semi-wide eyes signaling your BFF or partner that you must leave pronto. It's when you make side eyes secretly pointing who just farted. It's when you roll your eyes when some moron is grandstanding. Or it could be a blank stare yet you can read each other's mind like there's an invisible tie that binds.

While you're trying to decipher what I'm thinking, here's a rundown of the makeups I used for this week's #FaceFriday (reviews are linked for your reference)

    Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
(strange on brow bone, burnout on lid, nooner on crease, darkside on
outer corner and lower lash line)
Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon (blacquer) to tightline
    Guerlain Maxi Lash
Jane Iredale PureMoist Lip Color (sabrina)

What's on my mind right now: I need a real good massage, Nordstrom is having 40% off...what should I buy, I can't wait for the long weekend!

    What's on your mind?

beautisol self-tanning mouse review, summer tanning, how to self-tan
   press sample

Contrary to what most of my friends from the mainland think, moi don't go to the beach that often. I know it's a shame considering that I live in Hawaii, and yeah five minutes away from Aulani Disney. So when my SILs visited the ohana two months ago, t'was the perfect opportunity to soak up the sun big time. Sissies went all out tan sans sunscreen while the skincare junkie in me was consciously reapplying every two hours. At one point, they told me "you need color, your legs look like haole (local slang for white)".  I laughed because it's true, my legs and inside arm are undeniably fairer than the rest of my body. Shoot, time to tan then!

ignore the toes please. but you can't go to the beach w/o taking photos of your feet right?

I will not repeat what you already know. Moreso, I will not write what you can instantly google- how to self-tan! What I will tell you isn't even rocket-science, technique is relative and experience is personal. But three things I need to emphasize 'tho (1) you need to exfoliate before you tan regardless of the brand you're using (2) use application mitt for even blending and to avoid staining your palms (3) moisturize dry areas such as heels, elbows and knees to prevent over-saturating them. You bet I learned from past horrific mistakes!

beautisol self-tanning mouse review, summer tanning, how to self-tan

Recently, I had the opportunity to try Beautisol Self-Tanning Mousse in medium/tan ($39, 8 fl.oz). It came in such perfect timing because I really do self-tanning during summer months. Just so you know, Beautisol is cruelty-free, vegan, paraben and propylene-glycol free. It's the brainchild of fellow beauty blogger and licensed aesthetician Sinead Norenius from SelfTanningQueen.com

The nitty-gritty. If you're no stranger to self-tanners, then you know that distinctive fragrance from the chemical DHA (dihydroxyacetone).  Technically, DHA has no scent but when it reacts with skin's amino acids, it does smell along with tanning. Beautisol surprisingly smells delectable during application. As the color develops, there's a hint of caramel but with very faint DHA scent, as least that's what my olfactory cells detected. As mentioned earlier, it's a must to use application mitt so I encourage you to buy one ($8 from Beautisol website). My sample didn't come with it but no biggie because I have spare from another tanner.

Generally, I like to tan at night (after shower) so I wake up to a gorgeous color. Plus, it's recommended not to wet yourself at least 8 hours to allow longer time for color development. To give you an idea, below are photos of my forearm (before) and how it tanned the morning after.

beautisol self-tanning mouse review, summer tanning, how to self-tan

.... yeah, I woke up like 'dis. Of course not literally with side ponytail and bangs but makeup-free and tan that can pass for a surfer!

beautisol self-tanning mouse review, summer tanning, how to self-tan

As to the longevity of my new tan? approximately three days before minor fading starts. Is it patchy? no if you exfoliate your skin every once in a while. Does it dry fast after applying? yes, in about two minutes. Does it dry out the skin? no, but I highly suggest applying lotion or moisturizer after tanning.

Yes Yo Mama No Oompa Loompa!

Have you tried Beautisol? Do you self-tan as well? Any tips you want to share?

cappelli pack a hat review, summer staples
   press samples

For the nth time, I've been saying that summer started early, at least here in Hawaii. Just before I wrote this post, I downed a cup of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Caramel Sutra to cool me off. This brings me to my next question, how are you prepping up for summer? I have some tips I'll be sharing soon but for now, let me tell you I'm packing a hat!

Pack A Hat is a neat concept by the new Cappelli Straworld, basically it's a sun hat tucked inside a wristlet. At $25 I think it's practical and travel-friendly, whether you're beach-bound or just out and about. The hat has UPF 50+. UPF or Ultraviolet Protection Factor measures the UV protection by a fabric. For reference, UPF 50 means it blocks 98% of UV Protection. Ergo, 50+ is the highest possible rating.

There are several colors to choose from: red, navy, green, lime, among others. I received black for editorial consideration and this is how the set looks like:

summer hairstyle, side ponytail how to

About a week or so ago, I trimmed my own bangs to give my long hair a rather interesting twist. Since then, I've been sporting side ponytail because (1) it's scorching hot (2) messy bun reached its boredom high level (3) it fakes my real age, haha!

There are two ways to do side ponytail, either you intentionally tie your hair in your good side (right or left) or tie in the center and then pull your hair to the left or right. I prefer the latter because it looks somewhat undone.

So yesterday TheFabZilla and Hubzilla went to see Godzilla 3D.... did you guys watch it yet? It was okay despite some boring scenes. After that, we had outdoor lunch at a place called Wahoo's...

I'm HANGRY! Angry when hungry. I don't deny, I'm normally patient except when mah tummy's growling. Hub said I'm dangerous so my chances of surviving the apocalypse is hairline-thin, LOL. After 15 minutes of waiting and being entertained by birds feasting on someone's plate, my bowl of wild salmon came....

I know I said sort of OOTD. Yes, it's really sort of like that because it's not a formal "hey I'm going to pose like some wannabe model, ready, aim, click".  So here's a sneak peek of what I wore to the movies. Such big deal, hahaha!

Happy Aloha Friday! Shhhh.... I'm testing a self-tanner so to go with the sun-smooched vibe, I decided to fake a glow today. But see having oily skin, acne scars, huge pores and sporting a glowing face is  quite contradictory in the "makeup-book-of-whatever rules". I mean why accentuate obvious flaws when the goal of makeup is to bring out your best attributes right?

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit intimidated with highlighters and shimmers but then I realized, it's just makeup. As we say it here in Hawaii, "if can, can, if no can, no can". I can.

The trick for us women gifted with craters is to not go overboard. I mean it's a general rule of thumb in life, anything excessive isn't good. "if can, can, if no can, still can".

Enough of the can can,  here are the steps for my subtle glow #fotd (some product reviews are linked for your reference)

    1. After washing my face, I applied serum and oil-free moisturizer.
    2. With a foundation brush, I applied Guerlain Terracota Joli Teint (moyen/medium), allowing it to sink in for few minutes before setting with a powder.
    3. I then concealed my under eyes with Maybelline Instant Age Rewind.
    4. I primed my lids with Nars Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base.
    5. I used Anastasia Dipbrow pomade to shape my lifeless brows.
    6. For my simple eyeshadow, I used Urban Decay Naked 3 (Trick for lids, Limit for crease, Strange for brow bone).
    7. I decided to do subtle flick using Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon (Blacquer) by lining the outer third of my eye, then using an angled brush to smudge and drag the color outward. I did this three times.
    8. I curled my lashes with Shu Uemura, then applied one coat of Clinique High Impact Mascara on my upper lashes and Clinique Bottom Lash on lower lashes.
    9. I set my foundation very lightly with Becca Mineral Powder.
    10. I wanted a warmer finish so I applied Guerlain Terracota Sun Celebration along the forehead, temples and jaw line.
    11. For the subtle glow, I used Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Rose Gold, applying it sparingly along the cheekbones.
    12. Finally, I applied Tom Ford Lip Color Casablanca for understated yet classy puckers.

crazy life decisions woman make all in the name of makeup, funny stories, must read makeup stories

Hello there beauties! Welcome to another segment of TheFabZilla Chitchat, a place where you and I  tackle topics outside product reviews or laugh at our own idiosyncrasies. In short, it's when we let our guards down and talk like regular humanoids. I initially thought of doing a weekly chitchat but my notoriously busy schedule won't allow my mind to think outside the box. I'm dead tired in most nights I tell ya! Anyhoo, while showering, the warm water could've tickled my right brain to function so before I forget things again, let's touch base on crazy life decisions WE make all in the name of makeups. Yes, with emphasis on WE. I see no other reason why you're here besides sharing the same interest for all things beauty, right? Can you relate with any of the following aberrant behavior?

    1. Falling for FREE shit when ordering online...

crazy life decisions woman make all in the name of makeup, funny stories, must read makeup stories

I listed this number one because I fall for this tactic many many many times that I lost count already! One time Hub said "did you buy the whole store?" Referring to a box-full of Victoria's Secret bath products and undies that can probably last me two years, #noshame . My stupid defense? It's free shipping with lots of goodies when I buy more! Yeah tell me about it. Funny how we don't want to pay $7 shipping but go ridiculously gaga with $50 free shipping!

    2. Can't leave Walmart or Target without new makeups!

I know I'm not the only one here. Don't you feel hyper excited at the sight of Target? I can't for the life of me check out with groceries alone! I need to browse the beauty aisle every chance I get and pick up things I know I don't need anymore. GoodLawd show me the road to redemption, ugh!

    3. The No Makeup Makeup Look

I laugh every time I see video upon video upon video tof the infamous no makeup makeup look. Yeah even more when I see several makeups used to achieve a no makeup look: primer, concealer, foundation, setting powder, concealer again, powder, setting spray. The real deal my friend is not to wear any makeup at all. Either you do or don't.

    4. Returning or exchanging unwanted stuff is damn expensive.

How many times did this happen to you? You don't like the item you recently bought or received in the mail so you decided to drive down to Sephora to return or exchange it for something else. Big mistake! To makeup junkies, Sephora is one helluva giant candy store! Why can't we just stick with the plan, woman!!! Why can't we just return things and fight the temptation of procuring yet another makeup! Somebody call 911.

What other crazy things you've done which I failed to mention? spill the deets, c'mon!
