  • Tarte Limited Edition, Fall 2014, Amazonian Clay Eyeshadow Palette V1, Review, Swatch, FOTD

First a QVC bundle exclusive, then a Sephora online limited edition, then pfffttt. As of this writing, I don't see this Tarte Amazonian Clay Eyeshadow V1 Palette at Sephora anymore. It could be website glitch, inventory problems, but whatever the cause is, I say bring it back por favor

A Fall limited edition release, this palette is for you neutral-loving ladies! Retailing for $38 (0.07 oz x 16), it has sixteen eyeshadows from rich browns to plums, shimmer to matte, all buttery-soft and easy to blend, with laudable wear time to boot.

Perlier Shea Butter with White Lily Extract review
    :: press sample ::

While dry skin is more prevalent during winter months, my hands in particular know no season. Perennially dry and tough, I have nothing but my obsessive handwashing vis-à-vis sanitizing nature to blame. Given this predicament, I stash hand creams anywhere possible: at the office, bathroom, makeup room, purse, headboard, car, to name a few.

I  had the chance to try another product from Perlier, the Shea Butter Softening Moisturizing Hand Cream with White Lily Extract ($24, 200ml). As most of you probably know, shea butter is a great moisturizer plus more because it also soothes sunburn, relieves itching, tackles psoriasis or dermatitis, etc.

Perlier Shea Butter with White Lily Extract review

The deets. Yes it's thick. Yes it's heavily-fragrant. I like that it moisturizes my hands and feet so well that the feeling of roughness is addressed albeit tentatively. The addition of white lily in the ingredients is supposed to grant smoothness to the most sensitive skin. I know scent is personal and relative but this hand cream is reeking with over-the-top floral fragrance which lingers for a while. It maybe trivial to you but not for someone whose migraine is triggered with such strong parfum. With that said, I hope to see a different hand cream from Perlier, preferably less scented or better yet, fragrance-free.

Ingredients: AQUA (WATER), BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER (BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER), GLYCERIN, BEHENYL ALCOHOL, PEG-40 STEARATE, STEARYL ALCOHOL, GLYCERYL STEARATE SE, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL, PENTAERYTHRITYL DISTEARATE, STEARIC ACID, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, PARFUM (FRAGRANCE), CETYL ALCOHOL, CARBOMER, DIMETHICONOL, LILIUM CANDIDUM BULB EXTRACT, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, TETRASODIUM EDTA, PHENOXYETHANOL, METHYLPARABEN, ETHYLPARABEN, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, BHT, HEXYL CINNAMAL, GERANIOL, CITRONELLOL, LINALOOL, LIMONENE, ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE, CITRAL.

Have you tried this hand cream?

One of the things I like about Fall is the anticipated return of its staple color, makeup-wise. Dark berry, burgundy, red wine, plum; call it whatever you want but this shade is definitely not for the faint of heart. As a lover of bold lipsticks, you guess I am doubly elated to rock it in I-don't-even-care-where-I'm-going-or-what-I'm-doing situation. Sheez, that's quite a mouthful but let me introduce you to one lippy that had me at first swipe. Kindly scroll down for more photos, swatch comparison, and the final verdict.

TGIF beauties! It has been a hectic week for me work-wise so I'm beyond happy that weekend is finally here. If you're new to TheFabZilla, #FaceFriday is just a fancy-schmancy name for Face of the Day where I use/wear all the products I have reviewed in the past. Hence, this is the exact face you will see should you bump into me at work.

I never thought it will happen but it's true. When you reach the age of maturity, ahem 40 years old, you'll prefer less and light coverage. Such is the case for moi and it's not even about this sickening humid weather!

My current-go to is Guerlain Super Aqua Serum BB Hydra+ in Moyen/Medium (review with before/after photos here).

I lightly brushed Hourglass Lighting Powder in Diffused Light over my face to set the BB cream. (reviewed in detail here)

To give me that bronzed, luminous and youthful aura, I used Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow (rave review here).

For my eye makeup, I kept it very subtle with NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia (it's a must-have based from my review here).

For my lower lash line, I smudged dark brown eyeshadow from Givenchy Palette Extravagancia (recently reviewed here).

Quick tip to fake age: fuller brows baby! I used Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown (I shared my updated brow routine here).

I tightlined my upper lash line using Marc Jacobs Highlander Gel Crayon in Blacquer (another must-have, read my adoration here).

Finally, to add color to a rather neutral look, I wore Dolce and Gabbana Lipstick Shine in Violet (swatch here).

Bronze'd and Purple'd. Give age a new name, why not peanut, haha.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

how to make tropical smoothie, mango coconut juice

How's your fitness goal so far? Can I tell you something really quick before I share my fuzz-free drink recipe? I have conquered two months without consuming chicken and beef. Initially I thought I won't survive but here I am, alive and kicking and should I say more energized?! Once a week though, I still satisfy my seafoods craving as I slowly transition to becoming a vegetarian. The only difference now when it comes to meal preparation? I cook separate meals most of the time or force my husband go all-veggies, poor guy haha! Like for example today, his dinner was chicken teriyaki with rice while I had roast vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots dressed in olive oil, kosher salt, black pepper, crushed basil, and parmesan). If I can't be inventive enough, I just go to Down To Earth (local health food store here in Hawaii) to pick up some hot dishes to last me for few days.

Ready for my post-work out thirst quencher? You will only need 4 items: a blender obviously, 1/4 cup ice, 1 cup coconut water, 1 ripe mango (slice the sides, cut squares and scoop out). Mix and grind, easy peasy!

how to make tropical smoothie, mango coconut juice

Coconut water is dubbed as "natural sports drink". It is rich in potassium, has less sugar and calories than traditional sports drink, and undoubtedly healthier than sodas! Mango on the other hand is called the "king of fruits" because it offers a plethora of benefits, to include keeping cholesterol in check, aiding digestion, boosting immunity, etc. Mix them both and you have a powerhouse drink pronto!

Feeling some smoothie? try out my strawberry banana (click here for more deets).

    What are your fitness goals?

With age comes experience, with experience comes wisdom. At my age now, there are things I don't compromise especially when it comes to skincare. I've said it many times, aging is inevitable and the proverbial fountain of youth remains a myth. But with a healthy lifestyle (I don't smoke or drink, I chug water, I use sunscreen), positive disposition (I stay sway from drama!) and religious use of products that deliver outstanding results (I'm big on serums and moisturizers), you can keep wrinkles at bay for a while (Imma proud 40, girly!).

With a gamut of skincare products out in the market today, from drugstore to luxury, choosing THE ONE seems to be an onerous task. But that's how it really is. What works for others may not for me and vice versa. Recently, I had the opportunity to try a new anti-aging brand which lists gold in its ingredients. Yes, you read it right. Since I'm a lover of gold (I wear my gold jewelries 24/7, 365d), I thought it was cool to incorporate it in my skincare. After all, gold is used in some luxury spas to moisturize, reduce wrinkles, fill lines and rejuvenate skin.

Allow me to introduce Allegresse, the newest skincare line by high-end beauty boutique company Bibasaque. Allegresse means joy in French; After using the serum and moisturizer day and night for almost a month, I couldn't agree more! • product fails, beauty fails, products that didn't work, beauty products to avoid

This new segment "Samples Saved Me" will give you the lowdown why I won't be buying full-sized version of the products I've tried, thanks to beauty samples I received as "freebies" from my various purchases here and there. Needless to say, everything is based solely from my experience, my genetic predisposition, subjective rants, and objective facts. If the products I mentioned worked out for you, hallelujah! if not, welcome to the club. So in no random order, here they are:

    1) Dr. Brandt BB Cream with Signature Flexitone (full size 1 oz, $39)
Claims: self-adjusting flawless coverage, anti-aging, brightening, broad spectrum spf 30
Why I didn't like it: this is sunscreen disguised as BB cream. The typical sunscreen scent is more than enough to turn me off, it's so strong and it lingers for hours (read: morning to afternoon). It oxidized on me big time and it made my skin look awfully greasy after 3 hours. This is the makeup you shouldn't be wearing on your first date or God forbid, near someone; the scent alone is utter annoyance.

    2)  Josie Maran Argan Black Oil Mascara (full size 0.27 oz, $22)
Claims: Argan oil mascara that nourishes, lengthens, volumes and curls lashes for 24 hrs.
Why I didn't like it: I'm looking past the 24 hr-claim because who wears mascara that long? The formula was initially wet then it became muddy after few uses. It smudged and budged leaving me with embarrassing black stains under my eyes. Between moisturizing my lashes with organ oil and mascara stains, I'd rather have none.

    3) Clinique Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector (full size 1 oz, $49.50)
Claims: oil-free hydrating cream that visibly lightens dark undereyes
Why I didn't like it: It's another tinted moisturizer that does nothing beyond hydration. Just so you know, I received several deluxe-size samples of this corrector so I got to try it for a month. Unfortunately,  it did nothing to correct my dark circles. Aging and genes are some of the underlying causes of dark undereyes so I've come to a conclusion that since I'm so stingy to pay for expensive cosmetic procedures then I'm better off using a concealer to camouflage the haggardness of it all.

    4) Stila CC Cream (full size 1.3 oz, $44)
Claims: skincare meets cosmetics offering the ultimate color correction while creating a natural-looking flawless complexion.
Why I didn't like it: I don't have perfect skin so I'm not even looking for flawless results. The shade "medium" is gray from the tube but once blended onto the skin, it's supposed to adjust to my real skin color. Sadly, it didn't adapt well because I looked ashy and overall unappealing.

    5) Mary Kay True Dimension Lipstick Color Me Coral (full size $18). Technically this isn't a sample but I won it from Influenster contest and since it wasn't a byproduct of a purchase, we'll categorize it that way oki?
Claims: instantly drenches lips in moisture and locks it in for endless comfort
Why I didn't like it: it feels heavy and oily on my lips, it settled into lip lines and has a very weird plastic scent.

product fails, beauty fails, products that didn't work, beauty products to avoid

Brand Marketing 101 disguised as moral lession. One cannot underestimate the power of fragrance in a consumer's buying decision, whether it's impulse or premeditated. Either you make it fragrance-free or delightful to the olfactory nerves. It's not that hard to sniff and evaluate. Scent is relative, others like floral or citrus  but I don't know of anyone who enjoys plastic, chemical or rancid odor. Also, the role of samples is to lure you to buying full-sized products so first impression does count! Common sense, why would I insist on buying a product that I didn't like from the start?

So there....samples saved me, my wallet thanked me, in the end I'm happy!

Nars Dual Intensity Eyeshadow, Review, Swatch, Cassiopeia, Himalia, Subra
NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow (Cassiopeia) on lids
    ::    affiliate    ::

Saved by a shipping glitch. When I reviewed NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia and Subra, I said I'm going to order few more shades because I was impressed with their overall quality and pigmentation. For some odd reason, my box was shipped back to Sephora due to "insufficient address". Imagine my disappointment when instead of re-shipping my items, Sephora decided to refund me but it took all of one week for the whole process to be completed. My restless makeup junkie alter-ego can't be contained so long story short, I stopped by Sephora because I really want to own some if not all of these overly-hyped bellas.

Good thing I went in to swatch because I ended up liking just one shade as I found the others I initially ordered quite close to Himalia and Subra. In a nutshell, NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow can be applied either wet or dry. Cassiopeia ($29, 0.05oz 1.5 g) is holographic pink or sometimes soft lilac depending on lighting situation.

Nars Dual Intensity Eyeshadow, Review, Swatch, Cassiopeia, Himalia, Subra

Nars Dual Intensity Eyeshadow, Review, Swatch, Cassiopeia, Himalia, Subra

Nars Dual Intensity Eyeshadow, Review, Swatch, Cassiopeia, Himalia, Subra

As you can see from the photos, there isn't a big difference whether you apply Cassiopeia wet or dry. But what I found to be more worth-sharing is the fact that this particular shade adheres to the eyelids better when I use my finger instead of brush. Also, the color payoff is sheer  so you have to pat it on quite a few times to make it intense. In terms of longevity (applied over NARS eye primer), it held up to about five hours with creasing and fading. That's not impressive in my little-black-book-of-whatever so while it's a cute shade to own, it's a bummer especially to us ladies cursed with oily lids. Ergo, repurchase is not even an option.

Last Monday, I left you hanging with what seems like a new 'do to moi. It's funny because when Hub was emptying the trash bin he asked me in quite a panicky manner "babe did you cut your hair"? Ha! the sight of long chunks of hair was obviously a kryptonite to him (you know... guys and long hair, such a big deal!).

But see long before I met this handsome man, I've been sporting really short hair, that pixie-kinda hairstyle for the most part of my 20s up to early 30s. But I love my long mane now and seriously, I don't have gazillion guts to chop it. So to those of you who thought I did something drastic to my hair or guessed it was wig...Nope! My hair is still the same length (past bra line) but I had fringe! I used scissors and thinning shears to give texture and layers to my bangs and sides. You read it right, I did it myself.

Enough of the teaser, here's the great reveal. Fringe and Messy Bun, what a fun combo for summer!
