no makeup makeup, makeup for beginners, jouer cosmetics review, swatch

Let's get real. There are days when you don't have time to fool with makeups. Days when you don't feel like wearing a crap-load. Days when you don't have the energy. Days when a no- makeup makeup sounds more sensible. Well today is that day.

Are you familiar with Jouer (zhew-ey, or to "play" in French)? it's a cosmetics line designed for women who like natural-looking and effortless makeup. But that's not the reason I purchased it. Truth is, I was drawn by its novel packaging. Take a look!

I purchased this set Instant Chic Signature Collection ($68, Jouer) when it was featured at Gilt.com before Thanksgiving. I believe I paid $50 or less. As illustrated above, these are clickable/customizable makeups for the woman on- the- go. I thought it was fancy!

This collection has four products, a velvet pouch, and style guide.

(1) Mineral Powder Bronzer (Suntan). This is my favorite from the set. It has matte finish and very easy to blend.

TALC, MICA, DIMETHICONE, HDI/TRIMETHYLOL HEXYLLACTONE CROSSPOLYMER, OCTYLDODECYL STEAROYL STEARATE, ZINC STEARATE, UNDECYLENOYL GLYCINE, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRAISOSTEARATE, CAPRYLOYL GLYCINE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, HYDROGENATED POLYCYCLOPENTADIENE, LAUROYL LYSINE, SILICA, TOPAZ, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, RETINYL PALMITATE, QUARTZ, PEARL POWDER, WATER, ETHOXYDIGLYCOL, BARIUM SULFATE, CAMELLIA SINENSIS (GREEN TEA) LEAF EXTRACT, POTASSIUM SORBATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN, HEXYLENE GLYCOL, GOLD, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, BHT, FULVIC ACID, PALMITOYL HEXAPEPTIDE-14. MAY CONTAIN (+/-): RED 7 LAKE (CI 15850), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 7499)

(2) Tint {Fawn- apricot}. Tint is creamy and can be used either for cheeks or lips. I like it more on my cheeks; it's not sticky with a wear time of six hours (almost gone after that).

RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE, PETROLATUM, BEESWAX (CERA ALBA), PARAFFIN, C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, STEAROXYMETHICONE/DIMETHICONE COPOLYMER, TRIOCTYLDODECYL CITRATE, OZOKERITE, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX, COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, ISOSTEARYL BEHENATE, POLYETHYLENE, KAOLIN, BIOTITE, BHT, PROPYLPARABEN. MAY CONTAIN(+/-): MICA, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77894), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), RED 7 LAKE (CI 15850:1), RED 27 (CI 45410:1), CARMINE (CI 75470).

(3) Powder Eyeshadow {Peach}. True to its name, it's really powdery. Not a fan, sorry!

TALC, CALCIUM ALUMINUM BOROSILICATE, ZINC STEARATE, CETEARYL ISONONOATE, STEAROXY DIMETHICONE, CETYL ACETATE, ACETYLATED LANOLIN ALCOHOL, ISOPROPYL LANOLATE, LAUROYL LISINE, SILICA, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, METHYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN. MAY CONTAIN (+/-): MICA (CI 77019), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), YELLOW 5 LAKE (CI 19140:1), CARMINE (CI 75470), ULTRAMARINES (CI 77007), MANGANESE VIOLET (CI 77742)

(4) Moisturizing Lipgloss {Starfish: sheer peach with shimmer}. It felt a tad gritty but quite hydrating. It appears nude on my lips.

POLYISOBUTENE, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRAISOSTEARATE, DIPENTAERYTHRTYL HEXACAPRYLATE/ HEXACAPRATE, BIS-DIGLYCERYL POLYACYLADIPATE-2, TRIDECYL TRIMELLITATE, SILICA SILYLATE, POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE, C18-36 ACID TRIGLYCERIDE, TRIDECYL STEARATE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA BUTTER), SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, PUNICA GRANATUM SEED OIL, RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ASCORBYL PALMITATE, NEOPENTYL GLYCOL DICAPRYLATE/DICAPRATE, BHT, ISOPROPYLPARABEN, ISOBUTYLPARABEN, BUTYLPARABEN. MAY CONTAIN (+/-): MICA (CI 77019), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), RED 28 LAKE (CI 45410:4), YELLOW 5 LAKE (CI 19140:1), RED 6 (CI 15850), CARMINE (CI 75470)

Packaging-wise, they don't click or slide easily. The concept was  neat but execution killed it.

Will I repurchase? As a set, no. But for the bronzer, I say maybe.

Have you tried Jouer?

P.S. The truth on no-makeup makeup is not to wear any makeup at all. Are you comfortable going out without makeup on?

how to contour, how to contour and highlight cheekbones, weird makeup tricks, makeup tips 101

Who else is guilty? I know I am that's why I decided to write about it for this week's chit-chat. You know, those weird facial expressions we make during makeup application. Tell me, were you like that since time immemorial? were you influenced by your favorite youtube guru and gurushh? Okay I invented gurushh; but these are your tweens (10-12 year olds) calling themselves makeup guru, heaven forbid!

So the hot burning question is, are these face contortions really helpful? let's investigate further.

(1) Contouring to create an illusion of slimmer or well-defined face has to be the trickiest. But see not everyone is born with prominent cheek bones (think Jessica Biel or Kiera Knightly) so locating them isn't easy. My quickie solution? Say hello to mah duck face!

how to contour cheekbones, how to have prominent cheekbones

Duck face is simply sucking in your cheeks to create a visual guide on where to apply bronzer. I prefer using a matte bronzer that's two shades darker, and with a contour brush (sometimes a round or domed brush), I apply it just under the cheek bones and then I blend and buff upwards onto the temples for a seamless look. In days I want to glam up, I highlight my cheekbones with a bit of shimmer.

(2) Next challenge is how to apply blush properly. Old school says you have to smile to reveal the apples of your cheeks. But I don't want Betty Boop makeup where the color is concentrated on the cheeks. I prefer a more polished and modern look; want to know my easy take on it?

how to apply blush, how to apply cheek color

If you've experienced constipation at least once in your life, then you know how it feels sitting in the toilet for minutes, doing crazy maneuvers here and there to liberate your ass, haha! Push, release, push. Constipated pout simply means pushing your cheekbones up. So with a blush brush, I apply the color just above my cheekbones and blend outwards.

(3) Do you get teary-eyed when you line or smudge your eyes? I used to. But over the years of fooling with eyeshadows and eyeliners, I can handle lining much better now. I've seen some of you guys doing this habit though, don't deny!

how to apply eyeliner, how to tight-line eyes

Fish eyes means making your eyes big to help you line or smudge your lower lash line easily. It's also a mindless way of controlling your tear ducts. I say mindless because you still get teary-eyed nonetheless.

(4) Does opening your mouth help with the blending of the eyeshadow or finding the crease? I've seen this many times from youtube gurus and gurushh. What's up with the mouth-opening? am I missing on something? is there a scientific explanation to this pandemic? I don't do it myself but here's a (mis)representation of the weirdest makeup trick in my opinion.

how to apply mascara, why do women open their mouth when they apply makeup or mascara

Call it crazy, baloney, weird tricks. Call it whatever you want. At the end of the day, it will look right, when done right.

The aftermath.

Oh makeup, you bring so much joy to a woman's life!

Still part of my holiday presents, Tom Ford 03 Casabalanca maybe the next nude lipstick you're looking for. Let me elaborate.

But see, nude is both relative and subjective. While I see Casablanca as neutral, some of you may argue and say that it's dark and to some extent, bold. For the record, Casabalanca appears mauve-rose on my lips but I've read some blogs describing it plum or nude pink. Must be the lips' pH? You bet. Is debate necessary to substantiate a real nude or can we all have a truce and say that neutral can be reproduced in hundred and one shades?

Chill woman, look at you and your classic analysis paralysis; and you complain what a complicated life you have? haha!

Casablanca, as with the rest of Tom Ford lipsticks, is housed in a dark brown tube with gold trimming. It is slightly shiny sans the tacky feel. It is opaque in one pass with commendable five-hour wear time. It's also moisturizing so applying lip balm underneath is not necessary. It has a hint of vanilla scent, kinda like MAC but more mature if you get what I mean.

I don't know about you but each time I wear neutral lipstick, I feel innocent, demure and overall wholesome. In my dreams!

Do you feel the same way when wearing neutrals?

There are so many policies pushing for a healthy America but you know one thing I find so ironic? healthy foods are damn expensive! Going green, natural and organic is akin to living the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Let's do simple math. $50 will buy me no more than five items from a health food store but maybe ten or more at Walmart. The solution ain't rocket science but if we can make healthy foods affordable to all then we will have better choices and maybe stoping blaming McDonalds for obesity.

Now that you've heard me loud and clear, let's focus on beauty matters. I don't know about you but my trip to a health food store is never complete without heading to the beauty aisle. It's the makeup junkie instinct in me, who else can relate?

As far as I know, there are three Whole Foods in Hawaii.  I prefer going to Down To Earth, it's locally owned but has the same concept overall. I just wish they carry more makeups!

For today's post, I narrowed my choices to my Top 5 a.k.a Fab Five so in no random order, here they are:

(1) Sibu Beauty Sea Buckthorn Hydrating Serum ($39.95, 1 fl oz/ 30ml). Considered a beauty berry in Asia and Europe, sea buckthorn has omega and bioactive compounds that are essential for collagen production, healthy hair and stronger nails. I have reviewed Sibu serum here but in a nutshell, it's a lightweight natural/vegan serum with inviting aroma which is perfect for daytime skincare!

(2) Mineral Fusion Nail Lacquer ($7.99) is a recent discovery. You may or may not know that I'm uber low maintenance with my nails and absolutely talentless in nail art. I think Mineral Fusion had me in mind with its chip-resistant formula. I am impressed that I had six days of wear time with Nickel and Dime (metallic silver gray) before it chipped, and to think that I'm obsessed with handwashing!

(3) Alba Botanica Lip Gloss ($4.99) isn't exclusive to health foods store because you can also buy it elsewhere but I always gravitate to it whenever I visit Down to Earth. It smells good and very moisturizing!

(4) Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel ($9.95) is an alcohol-free toner. In case you don't know yet, witch hazel is good for acne- prone skin while rose petal is great for hydration. It has a subtle rosy scent and for less than $10, it's a steal!

(5) Earth Science Chamomile and Green Tea Eye Makeup Remover ($7). This stuff is made from several herbal extracts. I like that it didn't sting or irritate my eyes at all.  It's fragrance-free so big props to that!

Have you shopped beauty items from your local health food store? What's your favorite?

So how many lipsticks do you have in your purse? As. In. Right. Now. 2, 3, 5, 8, 10? Call it a Lippy Phenomenon but isn't it crazy to find your beloved lipsticks unwillingly migrating to your purse? Front pocket, side pocket, inside pocket, makeup bag. If only they could scream, I bet you they're swearing now like waddafaq woman!!!!

For today's chit-chat, let's talk about what you and I might have in common; what (ab)normal people don't seem to understand; or why guys never get it. Of course when I say (ab)normal, I pertain to humanoids outside our norms. And with norms, I mean "guilty of possessing three or more lipsticks or I'm dead".

But who's to blame? Bloggers who enable you with their reviews? Youtubers who show and tell? Companies who bombard you with collections season after season? How many more nudes, reds, and pinks you and I must own? Don't ask me, I'm guilty as charged.

You see lipstick is my instant perk-me-up ally. When I want smokey eyes, you guess I'm wearing neutral. When I want a barely-there eye makeup, red lipstick is no-brainer. When I look haggard, I reach out to bright pinks. What you see me wearing in the morning isn't exactly the same shade or lipstick I wear after lunch. It's not being fickle-minded, I call it my emergency kit.

So what if we have varying shades of pink, red or nude in our bag, God knows these clueless humanoids will thank us later.

I think this obsession with lipstick was influenced by my long-demised grandma. I remember growing up, I used to play with her lipsticks. She always looked good, what with her perfectly-coiffed hair and luscious red lips. That's why it wasn't a surprise that the very first item I bought with my very first salary was a MAC lipstick . I was so elated I can afford MAC (we are talking mid 90s gurl, haha).

Over the years, I've earned quite a reputation, lipstick-wise. I've had encounters with (ab)normal humanoids who (1) laugh with this obsession (2) gasp when they see I have at least five in my purse (3) backstab yet had the nerve to ask "can I try your Estee Lauder?". Yeah the nerve.

But if there is one lipstick story that went down in memorylandia, that would have to be the fateful EXECOM (executive committee) meeting. It was in the mid-2000, our company president was hella mad with the very low sales turnover of the team. He was questioning each manager at the top of his lungs (mind you, I'm not kidding). When it was my turn to be interrogated, his angry mood suddenly changed and had this to say "I am distracted by your shiny lips, I can't talk anymore". Everyone laughed and clapped. I blushed and in true divaness attitude, I stood up and said, you have to thank these lips people! Wanna know the prophetic lippy that saved these humanoids' asses? Duwop Lip Venom. If you've tried it, you know It stings so bad but wins in the shine and plump department.

So there ladies and gents, the next time you see a woman suffering from this so-called Lippy Phenomenon, don't dare laugh or question her because she could be the next Messiah.

Bow.

Chanel Allure Rouge 44 Vevlvet La Diva, swatch, review,Jennifer Lopez makeup,American Idol, spring chanel 2014 makeup

I will pretend that you know me well enough. I will pretend that you understand my lipstick obsession. Well hello there, I know you're new to this blog.

But to my long-time friends and readers who know me from the bottom of my hypothalamus, no pretensions! You know I love me some good lippy every time, any time. On that note, pass no judgement because I added another bright pink lipstick to my arsenal.

While doing my last hurrah makeup-shopping for 2013 (weekend after Christmas), I can't help but be mesmerized with Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet 44 La Diva, one of the five lipsticks included in Notes de Printemps Spring 2014 Collection. But I'm always mesmerized like a kid inside a candy store so what else is new. Exactly my thoughts.

Notes de Printemps Spring 2014 Collection Chanel allure rouge 44 velvet la diva review swatch

44 La Diva ($34, 0.12 oz) is part of the Rouge Allure Velvet line which boasts of intensely-pigmented, non-drying, and long-wearing lipsticks with luminous velvet matte finish. La Diva is bright fuchsia or cool-toned pink that may not appeal to Neutral Nancy. But for Vivacious Vivian? you bet she's twerking.

Let's cut to the chase. While I adore its superb color payoff and commendable 5-hour wear time, it's disappointingly drying. I didn't like that it accentuated my horrendous lip lines. But for all its worth, there has to be a quick solution--- exfoliate lips and wear lip balm underneath.  No matte, no glory. Charge it to experience.

Oh well, here's the demi-diva rocking La Diva loca.

Do you like matte lipsticks? What's your go-to?

I see you wiped your mouth woman! I can't blame you, I drooled like a hungry wolf too.

Soft, cushiony, luxe, and sparkly, Illusion D' Ombre 92 Diapason ($36, 0.14 oz) is part of Chanel Notes de Printemps Spring 2014 Collection. Diapason is described as luminous deep purple. The other shade 93 Impulsion is sparkly pastel pink (limited edition). After several minutes of heated self-deliberation, I caved in to purple. Reason being, it's 2014's pantone color! But between now and next week, who knows I might buy that pink, haha! #girlproblems

swatch chanel illusion d'ombre 92 diapason

Diapason is an interesting eye shadow to play with. I like to use my ring finger to pat it on my eyelids, then a crease brush to blend and buff. You can see from the photos that it's purple when directly applied on the lids, then transitions to a beautiful spectra of maroon-pink-brown hues when blended from the crease up. You can use it on its own or as an eyeshadow base. There is minimal fading on the seventh hour sans unsightly creasing.

    Kathryne

It's time for another chit-chat my lovelies! I know it's way too early to talk about spring, what with the volume of snow you guys in the mainland are experiencing. Don't laugh but at low 50s here in Hawaii, I'm cold as ice, brrrr!

Consider spring-cleaning as my figure of speech. What I really mean is overhauling some aspects of your life or things you probably ignore on a day-to-day basis because
    (1) they are petty;
    (2) you never have the time;
    (3) nobody appreciates your effort anyways;
    (4) you're a procrastinator;
    (5) you don't like change.

I don't mean to sound like Oprah or influence your beliefs ala Chopra, of course to each his own. My life ain't 100% perfection either. But we are here to empower and rally each other. While I have done most of the things I mentioned below, I still need to accomplish more. So yes, you and I will take it one step at a time like virtual BFFs.

    (1) Alright let's start with the obvious, what else but makeups! Please tell me you know that makeups expire. While it's been said that you have to toss your lipsticks after 2 years, or mascaras every 3 or 4 months, I say stick to your guns and practice common sense. Anything that smells funky and looks moldy should be thrown pronto. If you are keeping them for sentimental reasons or because they are part of a limited collection you hate to divorce, by all means keep but please don't evah use it.

    (2) Next, let's attack the most-used yet least-maintained part of the kitchen, the friggin' fridge! When was the last time you have tossed expired products? Girly, that barbecue sauce has been sitting there for 3 years. And that ranch dressing, it says expiry March 2012! What about that turkey sandwich from last week's leftover? Can we all review what's in the fridge and toss everything that doesn't look right? It's no rocket science and I'm sure we can finish in ten minutes or less. Got another 15 minutes? let's deep-clean our beloved fridge!

    (3) Now let's tackle The Mighty Closet. So you're still keeping a pair of acid-washed jeans that you wore in the 80s, twenty or so shirts in every shade of brown, fifteen pairs of black boots, dusty handbags, brand new clothes in plastic bags, and still complain that you don't know what to wear for tomorrow? Dang! Can we have a show of hands here? haha! But seriously, revisiting my closet every now and then helped me curtail unnecessary spending on clothes. Gone are the days of haulin' because Forever 21 is running a sale. For one, I wear scrubs 6 days in a week; Second, I prefer timeless styles; Third, I prefer quality over quantity. Lastly, I'm too freakin' old for Forever 21, haha! So how do you purge your closet then? TDS.
Toss old or dated items (bye acid-washed!)
Donate decent clothes to Dress for Success (or other associations) if Goodwill doesn't interest you.
Sell in swap meets or online and earn money from "trash"!

    (4) Next is my favorite way to spring-clean, purge friends! Tell me if you can relate: you open your Facebook only to read countless feed of rants from so-called friends who do nothing but complain, show-off, or spew hate. Then you have these real-life friends who only remember your goddam existence when they need something from you (husband issues, children issues, money issues, geez I'm no Mother Theresa!). So yes, call me heartless but I have purged my list many times over. I refuse to re-connect because I don't want drama and invite negativity in my life. It's a rude awakening but I wasn't born to please anyone, let alone save anyone. Fooled twice and betrayed thrice, Sorry I'd rather help a stranger than a user-friendly friend. So there, welcome to my drama-free and happy life! I wish the same for you this year, we all deserve it!

    (5) Pay off debts. Don't we all strive for financial freedom? But see in the United States you need to be in debt to establish your identity a.k.a credit score. Your financial future depends on your credit history. While I love finer things in life, I'm not going to splurge on a $80k- Hermes bag and be in serious debt for x number of years. Hub and I have this mutual agreement-- as long as we have roof on our heads, food on the table, decent transportation, retirement money, emergency cash fund, etc. we will not question each other how we use our extra money. It's all about PRIORITIES. Having said that, it takes a great amount of discipline to be financially healthy. But if there's a will, there's a way. Trust me it can be done!

    Ready to spring-clean?

    'til our next chit-chat,

    Kathryne
